When fall arrives, he gets a rough start at his new school. As he continues his job, he starts to get to know the people on his route, as well as begins drawing lessons with Mr. In her house is another plate from the Audubon book-the Red-Throated Divers. He starts his Saturday job at the deli, and meets Mrs. Powell offers to teach Doug how to draw the Arctic Tern, which he at first declines. She gets him a job as a delivery boy at her father’s deli. A little while later, he and Lil run into each other again and start to become friends. However, Doug can’t read, so he doesn’t know what it says. After talking to her, he goes into the library and sees the display of Audubon’s original book, which is open to the Arctic Tern plate. Soon after moving, Doug meets Lil, a girl his age, outside of the public library and gets off on the wrong foot with her. Then his abusive father loses his job and his family moves to Marysville, NY, just before which his friend gives him the autographed jacket he’d received from Joe Pepitone when Doug had been given the hat. He begins by telling that Joe Pepitone of the New York Yankees gave him an autographed baseball hat, making it the only thing he owns which wasn’t passed down from someone in his family.
